In Theaters This Weekend…

WAR DOGS:  Starring Jonah Hill and Miles Teller as two life long friends in their early 20’s that, during the Iraq War, take advantage of a government program that allows small businesses to bid on contracts for the U.S. Military.  After making some good money the two start to get a little greedy and in way over their head.

Now this, personally, was a good movie.  Jonah Hill has another outstanding performance as the coolest best friend who will go psycho on you at the drop of a dime.  While Miles Teller also has a solid performance as the just want to do the right thing partner and family man.  It’s a dramedy that  is intriguing and had me wanting to know more about the real story after the credits ended.

Although it wont be one of the all time great war themed films I do think that this weekend it is A Must See Movie.

BEN-HUR:  Starring Jack Huston, Toby Kebbell and Morgan Freeman.  Here we have the story of Judah Ben-Hur (Huston) who is accused of treason by his adopted brother Messala (Kebbell), stripped of his royal title and sent into exile as a slave at sea.  After years away Ben-Hur returns home to seek revenge on his brother and find his long lost family.

I had hoped this one was going to be better than it was but I had a hard time finding anything compelling about it.  At no point could I find myself emotionally involved with the characters or the story itself.  For a remake you would think they could have captured some of the excitement from the Charlton Heston version in 1959… But nope, they didn’t.

This would have made a better made for TV movie than one for the big screen.  That’s why this is Not A Must See Movie.
