In Movie Theaters This Weekend

The Light Between Oceans:  Based off the book of the same name, and starring a great cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Rachel Wiesz and Alicia Vikander.  Here we have a romantic but sad tale of a lighthouse keeper (Fassbender) and his new bride (Vikander), that after losing two children at birth, find a baby girl who has washed up on a rowboat, with here dead father in the boat with her, and the couple decides to informally adopt her as their own.  Only to meet a few years later that actual mother of the child played by Rachel Weisz.

For the most part this was a pretty decent film.  Visually it was beautiful to look at, performances from the 3 main stars were great.  However, the story itself was very back and forth.  One second they’re sad, then happy, then sad, then happy again.  But no matter the mood, it always felt a bit melancholy.  And I think they went to the well once too often trying to tug at your emotions with some of the events of the film, that didn’t really work.  It wasn’t until the third act where they finally picked things up and made it a little more intriguing… But it was too little too late, for me.

The Light Between Oceans seemed like it would have been a better “Made For TV” movie… That’s why this one is also Not A Must See Movie this weekend.

Morgan:  Starring Kate Mara as a corporate troubleshooter that is sent to investigate and evaluate an incident of a top-secret project that involves an Artificial Intelligence known as Morgan, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.   Now from the get go this one seemed to have potential.  It was intriguing, mysterious and even a little violent… and it got me hooked.  I liked Anya as Morgan, mostly because she’s still a relatively new comer and that made it easier to believe her as the AI.  And the way she would go from showing no emotion to ruthless killer in the blink of an eye, I liked.  Unfortunately her performance alone was not enough for me to like this movie a whole lot more.  There were too many times I wanted something a little more to happen and it didn’t.  Even though I like Kate Mara, I kinda think her role really would have been better for someone else.  Not sure who, but someone who could portray “tough” a lot better.

As a new movie coming out this weekend, I can say that Morgan is also Not A Must See Movie… truth be told, it might have been a better TV movie on the SyFy Network.
