Sports: American Pharoah and Mayweather Emerge Victorious

Saturday’s so-called fight of the century in Las Vegas between undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. and fellow welterweight legend Manny Pacquiao was a tad underwhelming, at least in the ring. Mayweather won a unanimous decision in a bout that lacked hard-hitting fireworks, and was dampened by the fact that Pacquiao basically fought one-handed after suffering a shoulder injury during training. But the star power in the crowd at the MGM Grand didn’t disappoint, with celebs such as Jay Z, Beyonce, Bradley Cooper, Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert De Niro, Mary J. Blige, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, Mark Wahlberg, Paris Hilton, Diddy, Donald Trump, and Tom Brady taking in the action…

Meanwhile, there was also a little horse race on Saturday that you might have heard about, too. In the Kentucky Derby, American Pharoah outdueled runner-up Firing Line down the stretch to win by a length before a record crowd of 170,513 at Churchill Downs. The Bob Baffert-trained horse went off as a 5-2 favorite in the Run for the Roses, and will assuredly be the odds-on pick to win the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore on May 16. (Baffert also trained third-place finisher Dortmund.) The victory was the second in a row at the Kentucky Derby for jockey Victor Espinoza, who won aboard California Chrome last year. Chrome went on to win the Preakness before faltering at the Belmont. For those of you scoring at home, no horse has won the sport’s Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978…
