Weekend Sports: Two Legs of The Triple Crown Down & NBA Playoffs

Kentucky Derby champ American Pharoah tore through the mud for an easy victory in the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore on Saturday. Hence, for the 14th time since 1978, a thoroughbred will have the opportunity to win the Triple Crown in New York’s Belmont Stakes on June 6. But it’s been 37 years since a horse pulled off the sport’s elusive hat trick. Affirmed last did it in ’78, with the Belmont’s epic mile-and-a-half distance dashing the dreams of some astonishingly talented colts and their handlers. Most recently, American Pharoah’s jockey, Victor Espinoza, failed to pilot California Chrome to a Triple Crown last year, while Pharoah’s trainer, Bob Baffert, has come up short with three prior Derby and Preakness winners…

Meanwhile, the Houston Rockets became just the ninth team in NBA history to come back from a 3-1 deficit in a best-of-seven playoff series, topping the Los Angeles Clippers 113-100 yesterday to set up a Western Conference Finals showdown with the top-seeded Golden State Warriors that will commence Tuesday night. Meanwhile, the Eastern Conference Finals will feature its two best regular-season squads as well, with LeBron James’ Cleveland Cavaliers and the well-balanced Hawks starting their series in Atlanta on Wednesday…
