Kentucky Derby champ American Pharoah tore through the mud for an easy victory in the Preakness Stakes in Baltimore on Saturday. Hence, for the 14th time since 1978, a thoroughbred will have the opportunity to win the Triple Crown in New York’s Belmont Stakes on June 6. But it’s been 37 years since a horse pulled off the sport’s elusive hat trick. Affirmed last did it in ’78, with the Belmont’s epic mile-and-a-half distance dashing the dreams of some astonishingly talented colts and their handlers.
