Late Show bandleader Paul Shaffer has opened up about why he’s enjoyed being David Letterman’s sidekick for the last 33 years. “I realized, ultimately, that this was the best job I was ever going to have,” Shaffer tells The New York Times. “The main reason being Dave himself. How encouraging he was.” Shaffer goes on to explain that Letterman pushed him to do all the things that he loved on camera. “I had my own band play the songs that I loved, going back to ’Louie, Louie,’” he continues. “When I added that to the repertoire, I knew that I was home.”
