U.S.A. Wins World Cup!

The United States defeated Japan 5–2 in the Women’s World Cup final on Sunday, giving the team its third World Cup victory and its first since 1999. The U.S. took the lead early in the game with a hat trick from Carli Lloyd–the only hat trick in Women’s World Cup final history– and a goal from Lauren Holiday that gave them a 4-0 lead by the 16th minute of play. While Japan responded with a goal in the 27th minute and benefited from an own-goal by the U.S.’s Julie Johnston in the second half, Tobin Heath scored a goal in the 54th minute that sealed a 5-2 win for the U.S. The win also marked veteran player Abby Wambach’s final career appearance and her first World Cup win since joining the national team in 2001…
