Hall & Oates: Why “She’s Gone” Video Was So Bizarre

While it’s tough to decide which Hall & Oates hit was the duo’s biggest, Grantland settled on “She’s Gone,“ and proceeded to ask John Oates how the tune’s bizarre video–which features a disinterested Hall in a bathrobe and Oates playing his guitar with penguin flaps–came into being. “We didn’t feel that ‘She’s Gone’ was the right song to do on a teenage dance show,” Oates recalls. “In lieu of doing that, we made the suggestion that we come to the TV station in Philadelphia and just lip-synch the song…We were pretty crazy at the time, and we just carried our insanity right into the studio. We brought furniture from our apartment, we dressed up in crazy clothes, our road manager dressed up in a devil suit. They had no idea what we were doing and they got so pissed off at us, they thought we were mocking them…But we weren’t mocking them. We just wanted to do something unique and original”…
