RAMPAGE THUMB

Your Quick & Simple Review: “Rampage”

Primatologist Davis Okoye (Dwayne Johnson), is a man who keeps people at a distance but shares an unshakable bond with George, the gorilla.  George, has been in his care since he rescued the young orphan from poachers. When a genetic experiment goes wrong and mutates this gentle ape turns into a raging creature of enormous size. To make matters worse, a grey wolf named Ralph and an American crocodile named Lizzie have been infected too. With the help of a discredited genetic engineer named Dr. Kate Caldwell (Naomie Harris), he must save George, stop Ralph and Lizzie from destroying most of America, and find out who mutated the animals.

Loosely based on the video game, from back in the day, is pretty much all I knew about this one.  But was pretty excited to check it out.  After all, when it comes to action flicks, Dwayne Johnson, usually delivers some good stuff.

As I watched this one I quickly noticed some things I didn’t care for.

First, it turns out that Johnson’s character, again, has had special training, in his past, that makes him capable of everything he does in this one.  Second, the main, human, villain’s in this one, Mailin Akerman and Jake Lacy, where very generic characters.  Like they were in there because they just needed to have them there.  Third, not all the CGI (Computer Generated Images) were clean.  Meaning, you could tell it was done by a computer.  And finally, the story itself was kinda generic as well.

Even with all that going against it, I didn’t hate this film, I actually liked it.  What saved it for me was just the good and fun action.  Add to that some well-timed humor and Rampage is enjoyable, however, it’s just Not A Must See Movie. Personally, I think this is one you’ll like but won’t rush back to see it again.
