Marshall Thumb

Your Quick & Simple Review: “Marshall”

Young Thurgood Marshall (Chadwick Boseman) faces one of his greatest challenges while working as a lawyer for the NAACP. Marshall travels to conservative Connecticut when wealthy socialite Eleanor Strubing (Kate Hudson) accuses her black chauffeur of sexual assault and attempted murder. He teams up with Sam Friedman (Josh Gad), a local Jewish lawyer who’s never handled a criminal case. Together, the two men build a defense while contending with racist and anti-Semitic views from those who deem Spell to be guilty.

Over the past few years, Chadwick has starred in a couple of films about important people.  One was the great baseball player, Jackie Robinson and the other being music legend, James Brown.  Although each film was based around a very important person, the story and the presentation of each film didn’t really make me feel like I was watching something extraordinary.  This is, once again, what we have here.

I appreciated the history lesson and the performances by the entire cast but as I watched I just never felt the emotional connection to the character(s).  If it weren’t for the story they chose to tell and Boseman and Gad being a great team I might not have cared for this one at all.  However, a good story doesn’t mean you need to rush out to see it.  So, for me, this is Not A Must See Movie this weekend.
