A look back at Queen, one of music’s greatest rock bands, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek). Freddie, who was and still is, one of the most loved entertainers of all time defied stereotypes and along with the rest of the band, reached unparalleled success. But like many people in his shoes, Freddie, was surrounded by dark influences. After almost losing it all in pursuit of solo success, and a diagnosis of the AIDS virus, Freddie is able to reunite with the band and lead them in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music at Live Aid.
I think most music fans will agree that there will never be another Freddie Mercury. As the saying goes, Often Imitated But Never Duplicated… which was the case in Bohemian Rhapsody. Although Rami, as Freddie, did an outstanding job, I just couldn’t grasp him fully as this over the top, flamboyant superstar. Then again, I don’t think anyone really could.
As far as the film goes, I really did enjoy it. Watching their beginnings as a group and creating some of their iconic records and unforgettable performances. And when the soundtrack is filled with those classic Queen songs, it can really get that energy goin while you’re watching. Most importantly, for me, I found there was a nice balance between Freddie’s personal life and his time with the band. I think focusing too much on one or the other wouldn’t have worked.
Bohemian Rhapsody may not go down as one of the greatest Rock and Roll movies of all time, but I think the fans will enjoy what they’ve been given with this one. I know I did, and really want to see is again.
