Officer K (Ryan Gosling), a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department, unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who’s been missing for 30 years.
So in 1982 the original Blade Runner, starring Harrison Ford, was released and became a Sci-Fi classic. Although I never saw that first film I did a little bit of homework about it to familiarize myself with what I might see in this sequel. Good thing I did.
Right off the bat you notice this amazing world that was created as the current setting. It’s visually stunning and different. What gets me, when I say that about a film like this, is that’s usually where my admiration ends. I said the same thing for Ghost In The Shell and Valerian and The City of a Thousand Planets and neither one of them had a story that was as spectacular as the visuals. I’ve always said Sci-Fi movies are tough for me. Because if I don’t believe the story they’re telling then there’s no way I’ll buy what they’re trying to sell.
Just like the original there’s a great cast, led by Ryan and Harrison, and all with solid performances. Jared Leto was probably my favorite. However, I was completely disappointed with Harrison Ford. Not because he was terrible, but because this film really tried to hide all the things that he can’t do very well anymore. Watching Harrison limp every time he walked killed me. The fight scenes that used flashing lights to hide his not so powerful punches… Seriously, it hurt to watch this for almost 3 hours. If they would have had Ryan and Dave Bautista going at it more than in just the opening scene I think I would have liked it a whole lot more.
Granted I get that a lot of people will like this one. But with what I saw, this really wasn’t my cup of tea. So, personally, I think that Blade Runner 2049 is Not A Must See Movie this weekend.
