Renee Bennett (Amy Schumer), is a woman who struggles with feelings of insecurity and inadequacy on a daily basis. When she awakes, from a fall, she believes she is suddenly the most beautiful and capable woman in the world. Filled with brand new confidence, she is empowered to live her life fearlessly and flawlessly, but it’s what happens when she realizes her appearance never changed that changes everything.
So making a movie about a subject like body shaming and low self-esteem, seems like it would be a tough one to do. However, Amy, who has talked openly about how it’s happened to her, I think, is pretty courageous in trying to create something that deals with it.
Although there were only a couple scenes in this one where I thought the storyline was getting carried away, I felt it never really lost sight of the message they were trying to convey. Hell, they clearly said what that message was a few times during the movie. And to Amy’s credit, her performance, still being typical Amy, was enjoyable. Personally, my favorite in this one was, Michelle Williams, whose role was not one she typically takes on.
The only downside for this one, for me, was how quickly it wrapped things up. I know every movie eventually needs to end, I would have preferred something a little more. Other than that, thankfully, I Feel Pretty ended up being a much better movie than I thought it would be, it’s just Not A Must See Movie. However, one I think it will give you a good laugh and hopefully make you think.
